This project is dedicated to the idea that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behavior. Connecting an original domestic knitting machine via Arduino with an open source shield allows a real time control over the needles and one can directly knit digital patterns. TRICOTAUTOMAT invites people to enter the photo booth, take a picture and have their photo stripe knitted live and real time. An attempt to subvert the notion of knitted textile associated with primitive "handcraft" through its integration of computational design and fabrication method. The open source software intends to integrate textile fabrication into the field of digital manufacturing. The focus is on the impact of the digital design and fabrication in society through a playful and instant interaction, raising questions as democratization of art and design, production, fair trade, awareness for consumption, less energy consume and social relations.
